Description

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Mix well and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar until smooth and creamy.
  4. Stir in molasses, egg, and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  6. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. Roll the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut out pieces using templates.
  8. Place the cut pieces on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until firm. Allow to cool completely.
  9. Assemble the house using royal icing to attach the pieces, holding them in place for a minute to set.
  10. Decorate your gingerbread house with candies, icing, and other treats.

Chill the dough for easier handling. Use royal icing for stronger bonds when assembling.
